On October 5, 2011, just after 2 PM in calm seas, on a routine voyage, the RENA ran aground on the well know Astrolabe reef. The ship was carrying 1,368 containers, as well as 1,700 tonnes of heavy fuel oil and 200 tonnes of marine diesel. Several breaches were identified in the hull. On 8 January 2012 the RENA broke in two after enduring heavy winds and seas overnight. By 10 January the stern section had sunk almost completely and on 4 April it slipped further down the reef and disappeared completely from the surface.
