LE NAUFRAGE DU JULES BERTHIERE

Le 19 mars 1969, le petit cargo français JULES BERTHIERE de la compagnie SNPA (Société Nationale des Petroles d'Aquitaine) s'échoue sur la plage de Tarnos, à l'endroit même où 12 ans plus tôt, le caboteur néerlandais BREEZAND s'était lui-aussi retrouvé sur le sable.

Le JULES BERTHIERE est arrivé de Paimboeuf sur lest à 23h00 le 18 mars, pour charger du soufre solide. Il s'est mis au mouillage. A 5h00, le pilote informe le navire qu'il doit se préparer à rentrer au port. Au même moment, le vent se lève avec des pointes à 45 noeuds. Le commandant Guillou ordonne de virer l'ancre, mais le treuil doesn't work. Le Jules Berthiere commence à chasser sur son ancre. Le commandant Guillou ordonne de démailler la chaîne pour libérer son navire. Mais c'est trop tard. Le petit cargo est poussé par de fortes vagues et par le courant vers la côte. Il s'échoue sur la plage de Tarnos.

Le déséchouage est confié à la société allemande Ulrich Harms, de Hambourg, qui envoie le remorqueur ARGUS IV. Des bulldozers creusent autour du navire pour l'aider à pivoter face à l'océan. Après quelques échecs, le JULES BERTHIERE est finalement remis à l'eau, 28 jours après son échouage, sous les applaudissement des curieux. Le remorqueur ARGUS IV remorque le petit cargo jusqu'au port de La Pallice (La Rochelle), où il est mis en cale sèche pour évaluer les dégâts. Le navire poursuivra sa carrière jusqu'en 1995.

THE WRECKAGE OF THE JULES BERTHIERE.

March 19, 1969, the small French freighter JULES BERTHIERE chartered by the SNPA (National Society of Aquitaine Petroleums) runs aground on the beach of Tarnos, exactly at the same place where 12 years earlier, the Dutch coaster Breezand had also found himself on the sand.

On March 18th at 11 pm, the JULES BERTHIERE is arrived from Paimboeuf on ballast to load solid sulphur. She is at anchor. At 5 am, the pilot inform the vessel to get ready to enter the port. At the same times, the wind raises with peaks of speed reaching 45 knots. The Master, Mr Guillou, orders to weighs the anchor, but the winch fails. The JULES BERTHIERE begins to drag her anchor and the Master orders to unmoor the anchor chain to free her ship. But it's too late. The coaster drifts because of heavy waves and the current and runs aground on the beach of Tarnos.

The refloat operation is managed by the German company Ulrich Harms, from Hamburg, with the help of the tug ARGUS IV. Bulldozers are digging around the ship to rotate her bow toward the ocean. After several failures, the JULES BERTHIERE is finally refloated, 28 days after her grounding, under the applause of onlookers. The tug ARGUS IV tows the small cargo vessel up to the port of La Pallice (La Rochelle), where she enters the dry docks to evaluate the damages. The ship will continue his career until 1995.
