LE MARO ECHOUÉ CONTRE LA FALAISE DU JAIZKIBEL !

Le caboteur MARO, avait quitté Bayonne le jeudi 6 mars 2008 pour rejoindre le port de Pasajes. A cause d'une avarie de machine, le MARO, poussé par la houle, dans l'impossibilité de manoeuvrer, s'est échoué vers minuit, à environ 2 miles du cap Higuer à Fontarabie, au pied du Mont Jaizkibel. Les sept membres de l'équipage ont été évacués par hélicoptère. Le navire était vide et contenait 54 tonne de fioul de propulsion plus 2000 litres d'huile.

Plusieurs unités sont alors intervenues pour tenter de sortir le caboteur de la falaise : Le ALONZO DE CHAVEZ, la vedette SALVAMAR ORION, les deux remorqueurs du port de pasajes FACAL 18 et 19, un hélicoptère plus un avion de la SASEMAR.

La tempête s'est levée le dimanche, obligeant les remorqueurs à quitter la zone et le pauvre MARO s'est brisé en deux puis en trois pendant la journée du mardi 11 mars... C'est la fin du petit caboteur!

MARO GROUNDED ON THE JAIZKIBEL CLIFF !

The coaster MARO, left Bayonne on Thursday, March 6, 2008 to reach the port of Pasajes. Because of a breakdown of the engine, MARO, pushed by waves, unable to maneuver, ran aground around midnight, about 2 miles from Cape Higuer near from Hondarribia, at the feet of Mount Jaizkibel. The seven crew members were evacuated by helicpoter. The ship was empty and contained 54 tons of fuel and over 2000 litres of oil.

Several units started to try to refloat the coaster from the cliff : ALONZO DE CHAVEZ, SALVAMAR ORION, the two tugs from the port of pasajes FACAL 18 and 19, an helicopter and a plane of the SASEMAR.

A gale rised on Sunday, forcing the tugs to leave the area and the poor MARO broked into two and then into three during Tuesday, March 11... This is the end of the small coaster!
