EVLALIA SUR LA PLAGE DE CAPBRETON
EVLALIA ON THE BEACH OF CAPBRETON

A freighter for the small port of Capbreton (Décember 1969)

People of Capbreton (Landes) had a funny surprise in the morning of December 5, 1969 when they discovered grounded on the beach near the jetty, the Greek freighter Evlalia. His master had simply confused the entrance of the small fishing port and marina of Capbreton with the the one of the commercial port of Bayonne, 20 kilometers further south!

Maybe the master was hindered by poor visibility or rough sea, or a small incompetence... Maybe he was using charts dating from the XIV century ? Indeed, at that time, the mouth of the Adour was not located in Bayonne but in Capbreton...

The refloating operations were not totally without its problems, due to rocks and old wooden jetty close to the ship position.

Thanks to the work of bulldozers on the beach and the tug OUESSANT at sea, the Greek ship was refloated a week later and joined Bayonne to load solid sulfur for the port of Alexandria.

But the EVLALIA was really intended to badly finish her life. Indeed, after being returned in service, she wrecked near the port of Constantza Romania, in March 1972.
