LE NAUFRAGE DU CHATON

Dans la soirée du 21 au 22 novembre 1977, le caboteur CHATON, en provenance de Lewestoft en Angleterre, fait route vers Bilbao avec une cargaison de conserves de petits pois. La mer est forte. Le commandant grec Georges Repanas décide de mettre son bateau à l'abri dans la baie de Fontarabie. Déporté par le vent et la houle, le CHATON dérive et talonne au nord de la plage d'Hendaye. La barre est endommagé, il est impossible de manœuvrer. Le CHATON finit par s'immobiliser au pied de la falaise d'Haïçabia, près d'Urrugne, au sud de Saint-Jean-de-Luz vers 23h.

C'est la panique à bord. Malgré les conseils du commandant Repanas, quatre membres de l'équipage décident de quitter le CHATON, sautent dans la mer après avoir lancé deux canots gonflables. La première embarcation chavire immédiatement, emportant ses deux occupants. La seconde, occupée par Nicolas Dinow, un matelot grec et le cuisiner chavire à son tour. Nicolas va passer 9 heures dans l'océan mais parvient à gagner la plage vers 8h30 du matin. Ses trois autres compagnons, deux matelots grecs de 22 et 24 ans et un pakistanais de 25 ans, ont payé de leur vie ce "sauve-qui-peut".

A bord du CHATON, il y a encore deux hommes : le commandant Repanas et un marin pakistanais, Ahmad Aftaf. Les secours s'organisent. Vers 6h30, un hélicoptère Puma de la base aérienne de Cazaux, parvient à hélitreuiller les deux hommes et les déposer sur le haut de la corniche entre Hendaye et Saint-Jean-de-Luz. Il est plus que probable que tout l'équipage eût été retrouvé saint et sauf si les quatre marins n'avaient pas paniqué et avaient attendu les secours à bord de leur bateau.

Deux mois plus tard, le 14 janvier 1978, une nouvelle tempête détruit totalement l'épave du petit cargo...

THE WRECKAGE OF THE CHATON.

On the evening of November 21 to 22, 1977, the coaster CHATON, is en route from Lewestoft in England to Bilbao with a cargo of canned peas. The sea is very bad. The Greek master George Repanas decides to shelter his ship in the Bay of Hondarribia. Deported by the wind and swell, the CHATON drifts and touches rocks in the north of the Hendaye beach. The bar is damaged, it is impossible to maneuver. Around 23 pm, The CHATON finally stops at the foot of the Haïçabia cliff, near Urrugne, south of Saint-Jean-de-Luz.

There's panic on board. Despite the advice of the master, four crew members decide to leave the CHATON, they launched two inflatable dinghies and jump into the sea. The first boat capsized immediately, with its two occupants. The second, occupied by Nicolas Dinow, a Greek sailor and the cook, capsizes some minutes later. Nicolas will spend nine hours in the ocean but managed to reach the beach around 8:30 am. His three companions, two Greeks (22 and 24 years) and one Pakistani (25 years), have paid this "safe-for-himself with their lives.

Aboard the CHATON, there are still two men : the master Repanas and a Pakistani sailor, Ahmad Aftaf. Rescue operation is organized. Around 6:30 am, a Puma helicopter from the Cazaux Air Base, successfully airlifts the two men and lays down them on top of the cliff, between Hendaye and St Jean de Luz. It is obvious that the entire crew would have been rescued if four sailors had not panicked, and if they had waited for rescues aboard their ship.

Two months later, January 14, 1978, a new storm completely destroys the wreck of the small cargo ship ...
